Self-Defined Greatness

cfcchittenden

What if everything you’ve been told about greatness is only half the truth?

We live in a world that bombards us with images of what success is supposed to look like: the prestigious job titles, the big houses, the fast cars, the luxury watches.

But have you ever wondered if there’s more to it than just these surface-level achievements?

Let me share a truth that not many will tell you: greatness isn’t found in the things you own or the status you gain. It’s not something you can buy, display, or even quantify.

Greatness is something far deeper. It’s a feeling—an undeniable, powerful sensation that comes from within.

It’s the feeling that arises when you live in alignment with your true values, when your actions reflect your deepest passions, and when your impact on the world and others is meaningful.

It’s the feeling that comes from building a life that resonates with your heart and soul rather than from a place that satisfies the ego.

The bounty of conventional success—the job title, the big house, the fast car, and the shiny watch—fades into the background or simply becomes an added bonus when you’re living in a way that truly resonates with your deepest values and desires.

But here’s the challenge: Defining greatness and living life on your own terms requires courage. It often means rejecting the narratives handed to you by society, culture, and even well-meaning friends and family.

It means looking within and asking yourself the tough questions:

What does greatness look like, to me, on my terms?

How can I create a truly great life?

What do I want to be known and remembered for?

The world will always try to impose its version of success on you. It will try to convince you that more is better, that status is the ultimate goal, and that your worth is measured by your ability to consume.

But the truth is that greatness is deeply personal. It’s not about what you achieve compared to others; it’s about what you achieve compared to what you know you’re capable of.

Greatness is about the pursuit of your unique potential. It’s about the courage to follow your heart and your own path, even when it diverges from the well-trodden road.

It’s about living a life that feels authentic and aligned with who you are at your core.

So, how do you go about defining greatness on your own terms?

Here are three questions to reflect on this week to help you self-define your greatness:

  1. What do I value most deeply? – Identify the core values that drive you. What is non-negotiable in your life, and how are you bringing this to life through action each week?

  2. What impact do I want to make? – Through your work, through your choices, through your actions, through your state of being and through your interactions with people.

  3. What lights me up? – What are the activities, passions, interests, causes, and pursuits that make you feel most alive?

Greatness is not something that is given to you. It’s something you create. It’s a feeling, a state of being, and a commitment to live your life fully, authentically, and on your own terms.

Greatness is found in the things that ignite your spirit and bring meaning, purpose and joy to your life.

Keep rising,

Caspar
